Professor Patrica Hertel highlighted the role of the former chancellor as a promoter of tourism in the Canary Islands
The path ‘La Senda del Mar’ is now called ‘Willy Brandt’
This Saturday, at the Iberostar l Palace Fuerteventura Hote, the conferences Tribute to Willy Brandt continued. The journalist and president of the Social Council of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Ángel Tristán Pimienta, recalled the legacy of Willy Brandt in Fuerteventura, after his visit to the island during Christmas of 1972. Tristán was one of the speakers who participated in the days of homage organized by the Tourist Board of Fuerteventura and the City council of Pájara in honor to the ex- German chancellor.
Angel Tristan was one of the journalists who followed closely the visit of the German politician, when Willy Brandt arrived in Fuerteventura by medical prescription to treat a respiratory condition.
Professor Patrica Hertel offered a conference in which she pointed out that the decision to choose Fuerteventura was not accidental. As she said “we must place Willy Brandt’s visit in the historical context, since Spain was under Franco’s dictatorship” and his intention was ” To put the media focus on Fuerteventura, and show his great interest in the destination” something that managed to “boost the tourism industry in the area.”
The tribute to the figure of Willy Brandt reached a peak on Friday when the new ‘Walk Willy Brandt’ was inaugurated, presided over by a statue in his honour, as well as the inauguration of a photography exhibition on his stay on the island, which was supported by the Willy Brandt Institute.
The tribute was organized by the Fuerteventura Tourist Board and the City of Pájara and had the collaboration of the Iberostar Palace Fuerteventura Hotel, which will become the first five stars of the area.
